The Montessori method, and the freedom to grow in nature
At Montessori na Quinta, we believe children learn best when they have the space to simply be themselves, indoors and outdoors, with bare feet on the ground and a heart at peace.
A different way of seeing children
The Montessori Method, created by Italian physician Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, begins with a simple and profound idea: children carry within them a natural desire to learn. The adult's role is not to teach, it is to prepare an environment where that desire can unfold freely.
In practice, this means a thoughtfully organized space, hands-on materials the child can explore independently, and guides who observe, support, and honor each child's own pace. No rush. No pressure. Just trust.
It's an alternative to traditional early childhood education that places the child, not the curriculum, at the centre of everything.
The prepared environment
Every detail of the space is designed so children can move with autonomy and confidence, where everything has its place, and everything invites discovery.
Respect for individual rhythm
No child is hurried or compared here. Learning happens when the child is ready, and that moment is honoured.
Learning by doing
Montessori materials are sensorial, concrete and self-correcting. Children try, make mistakes, correct themselves and learn, without needing adult approval at every step.
Guide, not teacher
Our guides are AMI-certified, trained by the organisation founded by Maria Montessori herself. They observe closely, intervene gently, and trust children deeply.

Where Montessori meets the Quinta
At Montessori na Quinta, the method doesn't stop at the door. Our outdoor garden is a natural extension of the prepared environment, not a playground, but a living, breathing space for learning.
Here, children tend to plants, observe the cycles of nature, move freely with their whole bodies, and play, because we believe that free outdoor play doesn't contradict Montessori. It completes it.
The earth, the seasons, the elements, the living world, these are all Montessori materials. And the Quinta is the richest environment we could possibly offer.
This is what makes us unique in Portugal: a learning space where children grow indoor and outdoor.
Questions parents often ask
What exactly is a Montessori learning space?
It's a prepared, intentional environment guided by Montessori principles, outside the traditional nursery or kindergarten framework. Children have freedom of movement, specific materials to explore, and certified guides, in a more flexible, individualized model than the conventional system.
Will my child learn to read and write?
The Montessori Method includes specific materials for language development, introduced sensorially and at each child's own pace. Many children learn to read and write naturally, without pressure or rushing.
How does free outdoor play fit with Montessori?
For us, free play in nature isn't in conflict with Montessori, it's aligned with it. Both respect the child's autonomy, spontaneous exploration, and learning through direct experience. At the Quinta, one beautifully complements the other.
Will children struggle to adapt to primary school?
Contrary to what some may think, children who attend Montessori schools typically arrive at primary school with a very strong foundation: independence, concentration, a love of learning, and genuine self-confidence. These are the qualities, not early memorization, that support a happy academic journey.
What age should children start?
Our space welcomes children from ages 3 to 6, an extraordinary phase of development, where children absorb the world with unique intensity. The earlier this phase is accompanied with respect and intention, the deeper the foundations being built.
